The IPBN will take a look at the advances that the port city of Matosinhos is taking in the maritime world in an effort to highlight the synergies and potential partnerships that exist with Ireland at the 2023 edition of the IPBN Ocean Conference on Wednesday, October 25 at the EDP Auditorium of the Porto Business School. In partnership with the Porto Business School, the City Hall of Matosinhos, and the Interdisciplinary Center of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), our focus will be on the blue economy via talks on offshore wind energy, the position and aspiration of the ports of Leixões, Viana do Castelo, and the Douro Navigable Route among other topics.
Following introductions and welcoming speeches, the first panel and the second panel discussions of the conference, the third panel will be a conversation with the Port of Leixoes about the place of Matosinhos in the maritime transport industry with Luís Monteiro, Head of the Environment and Energy Efficiency Division - APDL, responsible for managing the Ports of Leixões, Viana do Castelo and the Douro Navigable Route and Isabel Vellozo Ferreira, Partner at Vellozo Ferreira e Associados. The discussion will be moderated by Pedro Castro Henriques, IPBN member and CEO of Strongstep.
Luís Monteiro's professional life has been marked by constant challenge and continuous learning. After graduating from FEUP, he led a division in Penafiel Town Hall with more than 90 cleaners and gardeners and left behind an innovative project for composting green waste from gardens and cemeteries, which was recognized by the European Commission. In 2014 Luís was appointed Head of the Territorial Planning and Environment Division at Valongo City Council and later, in 2020, he replaced his municipal reality with a new challenge at APDL - Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo, S.A., where he performed technical duties in the Works and Equipment Department from 2020 to 2022. In March of 2022, he was named Head of the Environment and Energy Efficiency Division at APDL and has been working closely with ports ever since.
Today maritime trade thrives in Portugal thanks to companies like APDL, which manages the largest port in Northern Portugal - Leixões. Located just 10 kilometers outside the UNESCO World Heritage city of Porto, Leixões plays a significant role in Europe’s trade, being on the continent’s Atlantic seaboard.
